I am no longer facilitating these eventsFrom 2009 - 2023, on the Saturday before Mother's Day, I facilitated a "Motherless Mother's Day Ceremony." People brought photos of their mother or loved one, a story about her, and something to eat or drink that she would have liked. We told stories, lit candles, cried and laughed together as we remembered our Mothers.

Mother’s Day is all about “Celebrating Mom.” The assumption on Mother’s Day is that our mothers are alive and well and this is a special day to thank them for being our mothers. So everything on this day is geared to showing mom how much we care by giving her flowers, cards, candy and gifts. Now, imagine how painful this can be if our mother has already died.
Grief is not a linear process: it is circular and seasonal; returning our pain to us on birthdays, holidays, anniversaries of death and other special occasions… There is healing that comes with tears, especially if we gather together in groups and can comfort each other. There is healing that comes in remembering, in sharing our stories with others who have also suffered loss. I host this celebration because for those who have lost their mothers, Mother’s Day can be very sad… it is a holiday that compounds the pain of our grief by reminding us of all we've lost. Thank you to all of you who participated in all of these gatherings over the years; for sharing your Mother's and your story. We are stronger for being in this all together. Shae Uisna |
"Tears, but also Laughter..." |
My mother, Phyllis T. Zeff, died on Christmas Eve in 1994. In 2008, I came up with the idea of honoring "Mothers No Longer with Us" in a "Motherless Mother's Day Ceremony." This was immediately following my training as a certified Life-Cycle Celebrant® through the Celebrant Foundation & Institute, where I now teach.
While people come to a Motherless Mother's Day Gathering prepared for tears, what surprises them is the laughter... by telling stories about our mothers, we keep them alive in our hearts and memories. By bringing a dish that our Mom would have liked, we remember moments from her life and things she shared with us. In these ways, our mothers' lives continue on in us.
